Christmas Advent Calendars were originally introduced by the German Lutherans in the 16th century. The word Advent originates from Greek, via Latin. The Latin word is adventus, meaning 'coming'; the ancient Greek word parousia referred to the 'Second Coming of Christ'. Bit convoluted!?
